10 signs your mechanic might be upselling you

4-minute readNavigating the world of car repairs can be tricky—especially when you're not sure if your mechanic is truly looking out for you. While the majority of UK garages operate with integrity, there are still some who use subtle tactics to upsell unnecessary services.Knowing the warning signs is your best defence. Here are ten signs that your mechanic might be upselling you, and what you can do about it.

The “Essential” Fluid Flush

If your mechanic suddenly recommends a coolant, brake fluid, or transmission flush, press pause. Most modern vehicles have extended intervals for fluid changes, and unnecessary flushes are a common upsell. Check your service booklet or owner’s manual—if the flush isn’t due, it’s likely not urgent.

The Brake Pad Panic

Brakes are a classic fear trigger. Being told your pads are worn thin or your discs are “unsafe” can make anyone nervous. But before you authorise a costly brake job, ask for the actual measurements. Brake pads are generally fine until they wear down to about 3mm. If your mechanic can’t provide the numbers, be cautious.

The Leak That Wasn’t There Yesterday

Leaks you’ve never noticed—no stains on your driveway, no warning lights—suddenly appearing? Be sceptical. Some less scrupulous garages have been known to fabricate leaks to justify repair charges. Always ask to see the issue in person or request a photo if you’re not present.

The Air Filter Trick

You’re handed a filthy air filter and told it came out of your car. But how do you know it’s yours? Some garages keep dirty filters on hand to use as props. To avoid this, ask to see your filter before they replace it—or mark it beforehand.

The Premium Oil Push

Unless your manufacturer explicitly states that your vehicle requires synthetic oil, you probably don’t need it. Some garages will suggest more expensive oil changes to increase profit margins. Stick to your car’s specifications, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

The Vanishing Old Parts

In the UK, you're entitled to keep any parts that are replaced. If a garage won’t return them or offers vague excuses, that’s a red flag. Always ask to inspect old components after a job—it's a simple way to ensure the work has actually been done.

The “Free” Inspection That Isn’t So Free

Watch out for garages offering complimentary inspections, only to follow up with a long list of urgent repairs. While some issues might be genuine, this tactic is often used to upsell extra work. Don’t feel pressured to say yes on the spot—take time to review and verify.

The Tyre Replacement Trap

You’ve got a puncture—and suddenly, you’re being told to replace all four tyres. This is a common upsell, especially for vehicles with all-wheel drive. However, most standard cars can safely operate with one new tyre, as long as it matches the existing ones in size and tread. Always double-check your vehicle’s manual.

The Vague Explanation

If your mechanic can’t give you a clear reason why a repair is needed—or they rely on jargon to confuse you—it’s a sign they may be covering something up. A good garage will explain the issue in plain English and answer any questions you have without hesitation.

The High-Mileage Scare

Just because your car’s clocked a few more miles doesn’t mean every service under the sun is needed. Some mechanics will use high mileage as a blanket excuse to push costly preventative work. Stick to the schedule in your manual and ask whether each suggested job is routine or truly urgent.

Protecting Yourself From Upsells

The best way to avoid being upsold is to stay informed. Always ask for the fully inclusive repair quote in writing before work begins and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Trust your gut—if something feels off, it probably is. Choosing a reputable garage gives you added peace of mind.At Maxamy Mobile Autocare, we believe in honest, transparent service. No pressure, no padding the invoice—just expert work, explained clearly, priced fairly, and delivered with integrity.

MOT failures: What you're most likely to get caught on (and how to avoid it)

3-minute readEach year, drivers across the UK get caught off guard by an MOT failure, often for things that could’ve been sorted in minutes.Let’s make sure that’s not you.At Maxamy Mobile Autocare, we’ve helped thousands of local drivers breeze through their MOTs by spotting issues early and getting them sorted—right there on the driveway. So, based on the latest DVSA data and decades of hands-on experience, here’s what’s actually causing most cars to fail their MOT—and how you can stay well clear of those surprises.

1. Lighting & Signalling Issues (18.9% of fails)

This one’s easy to miss and easier to fix. Nearly 1 in 5 MOT fails come down to something as simple as a faulty bulb or cloudy lens. What to check:

  • Turn on all lights—headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, number plate bulbs.

  • Walk around the car or ask someone to confirm they're all working.

  • Check for any cracks or moisture inside the lenses.

  • Look for hazy plastic covers—if they’re cloudy, pick up a headlight restoration kit or get us to polish them up.

2. Suspension Problems (13%)

Potholes. Speed bumps. Uneven roads. It all adds up. And your suspension quietly takes the hit. What to look out for:

  • Does your car make any unusual clunks or knocks?

  • Is one corner sitting lower than the others?

  • Does the car bounce too much when you push down on it?

  • Hear creaking or banging when going over bumps or taking corners?

These could be signs of worn springs, leaking shocks, or broken suspension arms. Get it checked early—small knocks can lead to big bills if ignored.

3. Brakes That Aren’t Up to Scratch (10%)

If your brakes aren’t sharp, your MOT inspector will spot it—and you don’t want to be caught out here. What to check:

  • Any squeaking, grinding or pulling to one side when braking?

  • Does the handbrake hold firm on a hill?

  • Can you see the brake pad thickness through the wheels?

  • Are the discs smooth and even—or rusty and grooved?

If anything feels off, don’t wait—your brakes are too important. And we can check them on-site with no fuss.

4. Worn or Damaged Tyres (7.7%)

Your tyres are the only thing keeping you connected to the road. Yet they’re one of the most neglected parts of the car—until MOT time. What to do:

  • Use a 20p coin: if the outer band is visible in the tread, it’s too low.

  • Check across the full width of the tyre—not just the outer edge.

  • Look for bulges, cuts, or exposed threads.

  • Make sure all four tyres match in size across each axle and are correctly rated for your car.

Pro tip: If your tread’s low, don’t leave it to the last day. Driving on illegal tyres can cost you £2,500 and 3 points per tyre.

5. Obstructed Driver Visibility (7.2%)

Yes, even the view out your windscreen can fail you.Common issues to look out for:

  • Dashcams or air fresheners hanging in your eyeline.

  • Windscreen chips or cracks—especially in the centre of your vision.

  • Wiper blades that smear or miss patches.

  • An empty washer fluid tank.

  • Bonnet latches that don’t close securely (a major fail if your bonnet could pop open while driving).

Spend five minutes here and you’ll dodge a surprisingly common MOT trap.

Final Checks That’ll Save You Headaches

Beyond the top five, plenty of smaller issues can trip you up—number plates that aren’t legible, mirrors that don’t adjust properly, or emissions faults that set the dash lights off. That’s why we always recommend:

  • Booking a pre-MOT inspection if your car’s been off schedule.

  • Bundling your service with your MOT to handle issues in one go.

  • Getting a free full diagnostic scan with your next booking at Maxamy.
